It is with great pleasure that I welcome Liriel Higa back to Opinion as director of audience. In this role, she will work closely with folks across the company to lead a global team of journalists who help subscribers and new audiences discover and engage with Opinion, collaborating across the section and newsroom to increase the impact of our journalism.
“I’m delighted to welcome Liriel back to the Opinion audience team,” said Rubina Fillion, director of strategy for Opinion. “She’s a creative, thoughtful editor who will push us to do some of our most innovative work across various platforms.”
In her previous role at Twitter, Liriel worked with major U.S. news organizations, including The Times, to build modern and distinct strategies for newsrooms and journalists using text, audio and video. She also collaborated with product, user experience and business development teams to grow the value of news for users and publishers. Before joining Twitter, Liriel was the deputy director of audience for Opinion and, among other accomplishments, established Opinion’s live programming in audio and video and spearheaded its presence on social platforms that provided novel ways for our work to reach new audiences.
Liriel began her career as a reporter in Washington, D.C., at Congressional Quarterly and came to The Times in 2014 as a fact-checker for the columnists Nick Kristof and Charles Blow. She graduated from Princeton University with a degree in public policy and grew up in Los Angeles.
Welcome back, Liriel.
— Kathleen Kingsbury
