Letter: University isn’t a business

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen brought up the old “we will run state government like a business” angle that Republicans love to quote.

After reading about the Nebraska Board of Regents meeting on Dec. 1 it made me wonder if “running state government like a business” applies to our public university system.

Obviously a public university is not a business, but a service the public supports because of its merit to society. It isn’t expected to turn a profit.

But if NU were a business, I doubt the regents would give outgoing President Ted Carter a standing ovation like they did at his final meeting, since Carter gave a tremendous raise to an employee, Athletics Director Trev Alberts, while leaving the next university president the responsibility of how to pay for the huge raise.
