Let’s talk business: Proposed grocery store merger focus of June 29 meeting in Pueblo

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser is set to host a public meeting from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at the Joseph H. Edwards Active Adult Center, 230 N. Union Ave., to hear concerns about the potential impact on Pueblo County with the proposed merger of Albertsons, Safeway and King Soopers grocery stores.

The Colorado Department of Law is reviewing the proposed merger to ensure it is legal and fair to customers, workers, farmers and suppliers. Those who cannot attend can still share their thoughts on the proposed merger by completing a survey at coag.gov/grocerymerger.

Colorado State University administrators tabbed for national leadership programs

Two administrative leaders from Colorado State University Pueblo have been selected to participate in competitive, national leadership programs offered by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

Associate English Professor Kevin Van Winkle will participate in the year-long “Becoming a Provost Academy” starting with the opening seminar in Baltimore, Maryland in July. He will complete a combination of in-person and virtual workshops during the next year.  

“I am eager to gain valuable insights from my peers and other academic experts during this experience and to implement new ideas on our campus as part of this process,” Van Winkle said.  

Senior Facilities Director David Herman is one of 36 individuals accepted into the six-month “Emerging Leaders Program” which focuses on higher education topics such as national trends impacting colleges and universities. 

“Facilities management is critical across higher education. I’m eager to learn more about the ways our team can support the academic mission and vision, contribute to campus planning and enhance the appeal of campus,” Herman said.

“Developing future leaders in higher education has never been more critical,” said CSU Pueblo President Tim Mottet. “It gives me great pride knowing that our administrative leaders continue to complete these rigorous and competitive development programs.”

Southern Colorado Economic Development dedicated to broadband expansion

The Colorado Broadband Office has designated the Southern Colorado Economic Development District as a Broadband Ready Certified Community dedicated to providing access to high-speed broadband throughout its region.

District staff engaged in a year-long planning process with community and regional stakeholders to identify gaps in broadband infrastructure that are a barrier to accessible and affordable internet in Baca, Bent, Chaffee, Crowley, Custer, Fremont, Huerfano, Kiowa, Lake, Las Animas, Otero, Pueblo, and Prowers counties.

“Access to broadband can elevate a region’s access to national and global markets, provide access to quality health care through telemedicine, and expand educational opportunities. The Southern Colorado Economic Development District is committed to ensuring each county and community in our region has access to this key economic driver,” said Leslie Mastroianni, executive director.

Sangre de Cristo Community Care wins veterans care honor

Sangre de Cristo Community Care, a nonprofit hospice, has earned Level 5 status from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s “We Honor Veterans” program which is the highest attainable level in the program.

The care center received the honor for its dedication to providing veterans with compassionate care that is specific to their needs and goals. Sangre de Cristo Community Care is the only “We Are Veterans Level 5 provider” serving southern Colorado.

“Many of our most memorable moments are those where homebound veteran pinnings are done andpersonal stories are shared,” said Anisha Lucero, vice president of family services at Sangre deCristo Community Care. “We at Sangre De Cristo Community Care are honored to serve our veteran communitiesthroughout Southern Colorado and look forward to serving them for years to come through our ‘We Honor Veterans Level Five’ partnership.”

The new status ensures there will be a greater emphasis on staff education and caring for Vietnam-era and combat veterans.
