A university spin-out that uses 3D scanning technology to produce digitised images of dental patients’ teeth and facial structure has closed a £2m seed funding round.
Mimetrik launched in 2020 from the University of Leeds Department of Digital Dentistry and aims to digitise the connection between dental labs and clinicians, for the benefit of patients. Its technology, which incorporates machine learning, is designed to replace the costly, time-intensive approach currently used to create physical models of teeth.
The firm says its work can allow faster and more accurate treatment. The latest funding, which was led by investor Northern Gritstone, will be used to bring its core products to market, which combine cutting-edge software, hardware and mobile apps.

Mimetrik’s founding team includes professor Andy Keeling, Dr Alyn Morgan and Dr Cecilie Osnes and professor David Wood. The trio have decades of experience working in clinical dentistry, 3D scanning and computer science, as well as having worked with global dental manufacturers and shaped national dental policy.
The firm now has its sights on the growing digital dentistry market which is forecast to double in size to $1.8bn by 2029.
