With the new year come new business offerings across La Jolla. Here’s a look at some of the recent arrivals, plus other commercial news.
Herbs to Acupuncture Integrative Wellness Clinic
A new wellness clinic in La Jolla’s Village aims to use ancient Chinese methods to treat modern ailments. Herbs to Acupuncture Integrative Wellness Clinic, run by Sydney Herbst, hosted its grand opening in late October at 7760 Fay Ave.
The practice focuses on women’s health, autoimmune and digestive issues, cosmetic enhancements and more using acupuncture, microneedling, herbal treatments, moxibustion (a therapy that involves burning dried mugwort near certain points of the body), gua sha (the practice of using a smooth tool to apply friction to the skin to increase blood flow), cupping and nutritional therapy.
“Chinese medicine is not a quick fix,” Herbst said. “Western medicine is great for those that need urgent and serious care. If someone is in a car accident, I don’t want them to see me, I want them to go to the ER. But Chinese medicine gets to the root of the issue.”
Herbst said she works to “put the pieces together as to what is going on internally … and ask a million questions because we want to get to the bones of it. We dig deep to find the answers” and create a treatment plan for each person that might use acupuncture, herbal medicines, lifestyle changes or a combination.

Forbleu by Solstice
Forbleu by Solstice opened recently at 5632 La Jolla Blvd. It is considered an offshoot of Solstice Interiors (which shares a space with the Hermosa Surf Shop that opened in Bird Rock in 2022) to showcase “a slice of what it’s like to work with us as designers and a really specially curated store of custom furniture, vintage furniture, wholesale brands we know and love/source from for clients, textiles and art,” said Forbleu founder and designer Katie Betyar.
According to her website, Betyar’s approach to design is “centered around mindfulness and creating a space you look forward to spending time in. With the fast-paced nature of our day-to-day lives, our mission is to ease the design process and provide a space that encourages a slower way of living.”
The design work focuses on commercial and residential spaces, Betyar said. She added that she “always wanted a brick and mortar in addition to the design business,” and the idea of Forbleu was born.
The art in the space includes photos from all over the world representative of Betyar’s travels with her husband. “We get the negatives scanned and offer large [and] custom-size prints in store as well as some one-of-a-kind painted canvas pieces,” Betyar said. “It’s a special little shop.”

La Jolla-based Events.com is poised to become the new owner of the Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival, which is being revived for 2024 following a one-year hiatus.
Events.com, which has been a Wonderfront investor since the festival’s inception in 2019, will become its primary corporate presenter. Moreover, Events.com is in the process of buying all the shares in Wonderfront.
“We see an enormous amount of potential for San Diego to have an iconic global festival that is really well-done,” said Mitch Thrower, co-founder and chief executive of Events.com. “We have offices in Canada, Italy, Scotland and Seattle. But we are headquartered in La Jolla. And for us, Wonderfront is really a local event.”
The three-day festival, whose first two editions took place in late November in 2019 and 2022, will shift to spring in 2024 to take advantage of more inviting daytime and nighttime temperatures.
The initial lineup of Wonderfront performers will be announced in January. — The San Diego Union-Tribune
