Thursday morning saw a meeting of future monarchs when Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel to England. The oldest daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf and her husband of 13 years visited the Prince and Princess of Wales at Windsor Castle, which is close to the couple’s Windsor home, Adelaide Cottage. Both couples shared a photo from the meeting to their respective Instagram accounts, and William and Kate added a caption that read, “A pleasure to welcome The Crown Princess of Sweden and Prince Daniel to Windsor this morning.”
Victoria and Daniel are on a three-day tour of England, which began with a Wednesday trip to a military training center, where they met with Swedish soldiers who are training alongside Ukrainians. The visit concluded with a visit to the Three Blackbirds pub in Newmarket, where the couple listened to a presentation about the culture of East Anglia. Victoria even stepped behind the bar to pull herself a pint of the Norfolk Topper by nearby Barsham Brewery.
Afterward, they attended a formal dinner at the Swedish Embassy in London. Victoria, a recently appointed goodwill ambassador for the UN’s sustainable development goals, spoke about the relationship between the two countries when it comes to reaching ambitious environmental targets. “Our governments cooperate closely. There is also tremendous power when the business communities act together,” she said. “Both the UK and Sweden are world leading on innovation, and our global competitiveness is closely linked to our strive towards green transition.”
Thursday’s morning gathering was not the first meeting between the two couples. In 2011, Daniel and Victoria were guests at William and Kate’s 2011 wedding. Back in 2018, the crown princess and her husband hosted their British counterparts when they made an official state visit to Sweden during a larger tour of Scandinavia. On Thursday night, the couples will meet again when they attend the Royal Variety Show at Royal Albert Hall.
