Kailis unveils Magic Apple plan for Barchetta

Kailis Hospitality Group has proposed to rebuild wellness store Magic Apple at the former Barchetta site after being chosen as Town of Cottesloe’s preferred operator of the coastal location.

Group managing director George Kailis today announced the Cottesloe site would be the first location for the upcoming Magic Apple Wholefoods brand.

Magic Apple Wholefoods will join the Kailis’ portfolio, with the beachside restaurant to open at the Marine Parade site in 2024.

A vegetarian-focus store named Magic Apple opened on Barrack Street, Perth, in the late 1970s.

The trademarks for the original brand and business names had lapsed but Mr Kailis said he acquired the WA brand in 2020.

Mr Kailis said Magic Apple Wholefoods would be the group’s first foray into the wellness dining space.

“The wellness industry is the future, it’s a space we need to be in and a space that hospitality is not really focused on at present,” he said.

“This is something very different that I hope will become a very important part of our coastline.”

Mr Kailis said the Magic name would be everywhere, with the company intending to enter the retail space with the brand.

He said the Magic Apple trademarks would expand into a wholefood product range, including bars, cereals, packaged drinks and supplement powders in the coming years.

The leasing of the Barchetta site had come to the local community’s attention in recent months.

The Town of Cottesloe opened an EOI process for the 149 Marine Parade lease last year and kept a shortlist of tenderers confidential until revealing Kailis Hospitality Group was its preferred operator on May 16.

After more than seven years of running the Mediterranean restaurant, the King family finally said goodbye on June 11.

A business plan, prepared by the town, to enter into a lease with Olympia Hospitality (Kailis Hospitality Group) has recently been published for the mandatory consultation period until July 19.

The business plan said Kailis Hospitality group will be committing up to $1 million to upgrade the building.
