Hardwood timber in a machine
Geoffrey Swinbourne left his role as state manager of Zenith Interiors early this year, after 13 years with the company, to start a new business that claims to innovate a hardwood timber product that’s otherwise tossed to wood chipping.
The new Crafted Timber business connects customers for timber floors, furniture “anything” with the product developed by 3RT, a partnership between Flinders University and Bosch and adhesive sealants and coatings company Henkel.
The innovation is billed by 3RT as “growing trees in a machine” for its ability to take “low-value plantation resources into premium hardwoods with the look, feel and properties of 100-year-old trees”.
Swinbourne said that 44 per cent of hardwood trees harvested in clear fell logging were considered waste and woodchipped because they were not long or straight enough for sawn logs (which need to be six metres in length).
This process takes the substandard logs, and “peels” them into veneers, which are then glued together with a water based non-toxic glue to produce the wood product.
Swinbourne told The Fifth Estate the machinery was based in Adelaide, but he hoped to be able to bring the technology to Canberra, where he is based, as part of the company’s licensing options.
The 3RT website says the glue is a “nano-glue” that “biomimics the structure of a mature tree in just hours” in a process managed by robots and the power of artificial intelligence.
