Yesterday’s announcement that DC’s Titans and Doom Patrol would be ending came as a bit of a shock, but while some fans began pointing the finger at James Gunn and Peter Safran, the former took to social media to note he had no hand in the shows being cancelled.
Taking to Twitter, Gunn replied to a fan that had blamed both Gunn and Safran for the cancellation of the two shows. In his tweet, Gunn said the decision to end the series preceded them, but he does still wish the best for those affected by the cancellation.
“The decision to end the series precedes us,” Gunn said in his tweet. “But I certainly wish the best for the talented group of creators, actors, and the rest of the crew that produced both shows.” The future of the DCU remains unclear, but Gunn has recently said that he plans on unveiling some of what fans can expect by the end of January.
Both of the shows, which were produced by Greg Berlanti, had been developed for DC Universe and then later were absorbed into HBO Max. Titans debuted in 2017, while its spin-off Doom Patrol arrived a year later. In a statement yesterday, HBO Max thanked everyone involved.
“While these will be the final seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol, we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings,” HBO Max said in a statement (per THR). “We are grateful to Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for making such thrilling, action-packed, heartfelt series. We thank Titans showrunner Greg Walker, executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Richard Hatem, and the team at Weed Road Pictures. For Doom Patrol, we celebrate showrunner Jeremy Carver and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson. For four seasons, fans have fallen in love with the Titans and Doom Patrol, investing in their trials and tribulations, and in their legendary battles saving the world time and time again.”
