Pure Storage has used its Pure//Accelerate 2023 conference to announce new and upgraded all-flash storage arrays, along with improvements to the Pure 1 storage management platform and a new ransomware recovery service.
FlashArray//E expands Pure’s range of disk-replacement systems and complements the FlashBlade//E that was launched earlier this year with a minimum capacity of 4PB.
Starting at 1PB, FlashArray//E provides unified block and file storage, and compared with disk-based systems provides an 80 percent reduction in power and space, 60 percent lower operational costs, and 85 percent less e-waste, according to the company.
The //E is needed because data is still expanding, too much is being stored offline, data centres are constrained by space and power availability, and power costs are escalating, explained Pure Storage APJ CTO Mark Jobbins.

FlashArray//E delivers the benefits of all-flash storage at the same time as providing better economics that disk-based systems, he added.
The hardware is a dual-controller design, with some configurations using “the industry’s largest” 75TB QLC DirectFlash modules that will soon be released. Pure Storage is aiming to deliver 300TB DirectFlash modules by 2026, and these will have the same power and cooling requirements as current modules, Jobbins pointed out, allowing “more terabytes in the same footprint.”
A FlashArray//E can be expanded from a minimum of 14 drives to a maximum of 48, with the larger configurations requiring a DirectFlash Shelf, which occupies another 3U of rack space.
FlashArray//E and FlashBlade//E can be purchased outright, through Evergreen//Flex (where the customer owns the storage arrays but is charged on a consumption basis), and through the new //UDR tier of Evergreen//One storage as a service (which provides a cloud experience with on-premises deployment).
“Legacy disk solutions, marked by high costs, massive data centre space requirements, and inefficient energy usage, are ill-equipped to support the evolving needs of today’s modern enterprises,” said Pure Storage chief product officer Ajay Singh.
“Founded on the vision of replacing mechanical storage in favour of an all-flash data centre, Pure Storage – with the expansion of our //E family of products – is eliminating the last remnants of disk in the enterprise.”
Alongside the FlashArray//E, Pure announced updated versions of the FlashArray//X and FlashArray//C.
The FlashArray//X R4 and FlashArray//C R4 are said to provide up to 40 percent better performance. The latest Intel Xeon chipset, PCIe Gen4, and DDR5 DRAM together also give a 30 percent inline compression boost.
The FlashArray//X R4 offers effective capacities ranging from 314TB (//X20) to 3.3PB (//X90), assuming 5:1 compression.
The FlashArray//C R4 similarly offers capacities from 1.6PB (//C50) to 8.9PB (the new //C90).
FlashArray//C will include the upcoming release of 75TB QLC DirectFlash Modules with built-in non-volatile RAM, while FlashArray//X will include 36TB TLC modules, providing a 106 percent improvement in density per rack unit.
Pure customers with Evergreen subscriptions can upgrade to R4 at no extra cost, and without downtime or disruption.
Pure also announced a new ransomware recovery service SLA guarantee as an add-on to an Evergreen//One agreement.
Where this option is selected, if a customer is hit by ransomware will ship clean storage arrays within 48 hours, and provide an onsite professional services engineer to assist with recovery from the time of delivery.
The SLA guarantees that a recovery plan will be finalised within 48 hours of commencement, and that data will be transferred to the new arrays at not less than 8TiB per hour. The old arrays can then be used for forensic analysis before they are returned to Pure.
“That changes the game again,” said Jobbins.
There are some conditions, including a minimum commitment of 300TiB of storage, the use of SafeMode on all volumes (with a minimum retention period of 14 days), and the ransomware recovery option must be taken for the entire Evergreen//One subscription.
“The demand to achieve business outcomes faster is only becoming more critical amid the uptick in malicious cyber attacks,” said Pure Storage digital experience business unit vice president and general manager Prakash Darji.
“The latest expansion of Evergreen//One delivers data storage infrastructure with built-in resilience, empowering customers with peace of mind in addition to the flexibility, efficiency and continuous innovation Pure has guaranteed for years.”
In related news, the Pure 1 storage management platform now offers enhanced anomaly detection, a new data protection assessment, and self-service SafeMode PIN multi factor authentication.
Enhanced anomaly detection helps identify large changes to data structures (eg, ransomware attacks) occur, thus reducing time to recovery and helping to minimise data loss.
The data protection assessment allows customers to benchmark their entire Pure Storage fleet against leading data protection best practices, and provides actionable insights to help achieve comprehensive data protection.
Self-service SafeMode PIN multi factor authentication enables secure and seamless access control, thus shortening support cycles and maintaining full control over SafeMode policies.
