Protesters from the Itsekiri ethnic nationality, yesterday, stormed the office of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Commission (DESOPADEC) to demand entitlements from the commission.

The protesters, mostly women, who arrived the commission’s office as early as 6:00 a.m., blocked the entrance with casket, scaring people from gaining entrance to the premises.

The Itsekiri natives, who were angry over alleged marginalisation, handed over a written letter, which contained their demands.

The letter, signed by the Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom, Oritsema Eyewuoma, the Iwere descendants demanded the Itsekiri nation’s momentary entitlements from the tenure of former governor James Ibori till date.

Their protest letter reads: “I, Oma Eyewuoma, the Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom, and the mouthpiece of the Itsekiri, on behalf of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality, by this letter, demand the release of all monetary entitlements due to Itsekiri ethnic nationality during the tenure of former governor James Ibori till date.

“The Itsekiri ethnic nationality is aware that there is monthly provision for Itsekiri nation like other ethnic nationalities covered by your Commission in the state. To the disillusionment of our people, that money has not reached the purse of the Itsekiri nation over the years.

“I am also to inform you that the Itsekiri ethnic nationality is miffed by this unethical conduct to undermine our people. It is sequel to the above that we have resolved to demand that your Commission makes available to us the total accrual of our entitlements till date through the office of the Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom.”

The Ologbotsere also disclosed that should the Commission fail to heed to the very minimal modest request, the people’s anger may go beyond the control of the Itsekiri leadership.

The Executive Director, EDSS, Favour Izuokumour, acknowledged receipt of the protest letter on behalf of management of DESOPADEC and promised to deliver same at the appropriate quarters, while he commended the protesters for their peaceful conduct.
