POLITICS
Italy’s government will announce a plan focused on energy
cooperation with Africa in October, Prime Minister Giorgia
Meloni said on Friday during a visit to Ethiopia.
Italy must be increasingly cautious in its trade ties with
China, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti was quoted as saying
on Friday in reference to Rome’s partnership in Beijing’s Belt
and Road Initiative project.
Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is out of
intensive care, but remains in Milan’s San Raffaele hospital
where he was being treated for a lung infection caused by
chronic leukaemia, two sources told Reuters on Sunday.

BANKS
Italy has put on hold plans to revive a scheme, known as
GACS, under which the state provides guarantees to help banks
offload bad loans, three people close to the matter told Reuters
on Friday.
COMPANIES
TELECOM ITALIA (TIM)
The phone group’s CEO Pietro Labriola said in a letter to
financial daily Il Sole 24 Ore on Saturday that “we can’t
procrastinate anymore” and it was time for “corageous”
decisions, as the company weighs rival bids for its landline
grid.
The sale of the grid, Telecom Italia’s most valuable asset,
is a key part of Labriola’s strategy for turning around the
former phone monopoly and slashing its debts.
In his letter Labriola made no direct reference to the
offers from a consortium made up of Italian state lender CDP and
Macquarie, and its rival, US fund KKR.
LEONARDO
Italy’s stock market watchdog Consob is scrutinising the
government’s CEO nominee at the defence group after an
opposition lawmaker raised potential conflict-of-interest
issues, sources at the regulator said on Friday.
SAIPEM
An appeals court in Algiers has acquitted Saipem in a case
relating to a tender in 2008 related to the ‘Rhourde Nouss QH’
project. The company said in a statement that as a result of the
verdict the court cancelled the fines and rejected the claims
for compensation previously imposed.
LAZIO
Maurizio Sarri’s team cemented its second place in Serie A
with a 3-0 win over Spezia on Friday, extending the club’s
unbeaten run to eight league games.
