The Republic of Ireland scored their first ever goal at a Women’s World Cup against Canada on Wednesday.
Irish captain Katie McCabe netted directly from a corner when her inswinger from the right flew over Canada goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan to send the Irish crowd wild Down Under.
Arsenal player McCabe broke the deadlock with the Olimpico after just four minutes in Perth.
Ireland sent home
It wasn’t to be for Vera Pauw’s Ireland side, who have failed to advance to the knockout stages after Canada came back on the day to win 2-1 in the Group B clash.
Defeat to Australia in opening game
Ireland’s first ever World Cup game ended in a 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Australia.
