Intelligent Interconnectivity Solutions for Air and Maritime Autonomy

[ad_1]

With the autonomous industry rapidly changing, system-wide reliability and verification is key. Advancements in component solutions are poised to transform autonomous applications and shape the future of transportation.

Trends and Best Practices

LEMO USA has seen an industry-wide move toward seeking out custom connector solutions that meet specific application needs. When it comes to components, uncrewed systems need reliability, versatility, and durability to withstand challenging conditions such as high temperatures and underwater environments.

LEMO USA’s custom connectors and cables offer seamless connectivity and communication within autonomous applications. With 3D printing, the company can provide low-complexity custom designed solutions in just days to weeks. LEMO also works closely with customers in uncrewed systems industries to conduct testing, develop evaluation plans, and ensure applications meet industry standards.

Autonomous Applications

For any connectivity situation, there could be multiple solutions. LEMO USA recently shared some customer case studies during a webinar hosted by AUVSI:

Applications for Marine Surface Vehicles

  • The problem: Connector and cabling is needed for LiDAR units on autonomous surface vehicles, which require water resistance for a sensor network connected with bi-directional Single Pair Ethernet.

  • The solution: LEMO incorporates its bi-directional Single Pair Ethernet into a push-pull IP68 T-series for ruggedization in a push-pull connector. The Bi-directional SPE allows for 2 pairs of 100-Ohm differential impedance to be carried over a single connector, with integrated ground isolation between the pair on the circuit board layout.

Applications for Air Taxi Vehicles

  • The problem: eVTOLs need reliable power connections from the vehicle’s battery to the motor. The cabling and connector need to be the lightest weight possible and must minimize EMI coupling to adjacent components near the cable.

  • The solution: LEMO incorporates its new multi high power ratchet-coupling connector. Six conductors are built into a cable with an external shield which also couples directly to the connector housing to help minimize EMI to closely spaced components. This saves space by allowing the cable to run closer to the adjacent components.

Applications for Tethered Drones

  • The solution:  LEMO’s self-guided latching connector combining both fiber and electrical contacts within a single ruggedized cable was selected. This simplified the operation, as the user only needs to couple a single connector rather than two or more.
