No fewer than 260 women and youths have benefited from the first phase of a skill acquisition programme provided by a member of the 9th House of Representatives, Hon. Micah Jiba, in Abuja on Saturday.
The programme involving training in fashion designing, cake, confectionary, make up, Gele, Fascinators, Turban and Head-gears as well as chemical works among others, was
done in collaboration with some private firms and was extended to beneficiaries drawn from Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Bwari area council.
The lawmaker in a speech during the skills empowerment programme, said that the programme was borne out of the desire to remove jobless youths and women from the street and make them self reliant.
Jiba said that despite the fact that he is no longer a serving member of the House of Representatives, he needed to fulfill the promise he made to the people during his electioneering campaigns.
“Although, we did win the election, but we made a promise to the people that we will empower them and that is the promise we are fulfilling today. After the training, we will be giving them startup packs for them to start a business of their own,” he said.
Representative of the collaborating firms,
Alpha Vision Engineering Ltd and Magnate Ligne Services Ltd, Mr. Anderson Newton said that they decided to train the youths and women from the councils, in order to make them self reliant in the society.
“Because of the present economic challenges and lack of government jobs, that is why we decided to train them, so that they will stop complaining of lack of jobs and be able to start up something on their own.”
One of the beneficiaries, Elisha Favour, commended the organizers for the empowerment programme, which she said will removed most them from the street seeking for jobs. Constituency projects were part of interventionist development projects introduced by lawmakers to assist constituents.
