Guddu, a resident of UP’s Sambhal, was buried under a pile of debris when the shuttering suddenly collapsed during construction. His brother Pappu told cops that the safety measures in place at the construction site were inadequate.
Pappu, who was working with Guddu at the site when the incident happened, said the iron shuttering was structurally weak. “Despite informing the site engineer and the construction firm that the shuttering could jeopardise our safety and cause a major mishap, no one paid heed to our concerns,” he told cops in his complaint.
On Thursday, the two brothers and seven other labourers were working at the site around 3pm when the shuttering collapsed.
“We refused to go under the shuttering, but the site engineer told us to work. We managed to save ourselves by running away in time, but my brother was buried under the debris and died,” Pappu said.
After the collapse, teams from police, fire department, administration and National Disaster Response Force had reached the spot and started rescue work.
On the basis of his complaint, an FIR was lodged against SN Godara, the owner of Godara Construction, site engineer Deepak and contractor Femuddin under sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code at Rajendra Park police station on Thursday.
Police on Friday said they are still investigating the matter. “Guddu’s body was handed over to his family after an autopsy. We are investigating the matter and consulting experts to ascertain the reason behind the collapse. No arrests have been made so far in the case,” a senior officer said.
The Northern Railways’ chief public relations officer could not be reached for a comment.
