Hyundai Heavy, Vestas tapped for Gray Whale 3 floating wind project

Korean shipbuilding company HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd (KRX:329180) has been selected as the preferred bidder for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the Gray Whale 3 floating offshore wind project in South Korea’s waters.

The appointment was made by BadaEnergy, a joint venture (JV) between Corio Generation, TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE), and SK ecoplant, which is promoting the Gray Whale 3 project as part of a 1.5-GW floating wind development off the coast of Ulsan.

Hyundai Heavy Industries has extensive experience in the construction and fabrication of offshore plants such as FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) and platforms, BadaEnergy said.

Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) has been selected as the preferred wind turbine supplier for Gray Whale 3, it was unveiled in the same announcement.

In March 2023, Vestas issued a brief press release to say it had been chosen to supply 33 units of its V236-15.0 MW turbines for a 495-MW floating wind project in South Korea. Details about the project and the customer were withheld at the time.

The Gray Whale 1, 2 and 3 wind farms will be located in public waters some 60 kilometres (37.3 miles) east of Ulsan Port. BadaEnergy aims to start phase construction from 2025 and begin the first commercial operation in 2028.

The JV says that the Gray Whale complex is expected to be one of the world’s largest floating offshore wind farms once its third phase is finalised.
