As the largest electricity generation and supply company in Greece, Public Power Corporation (PPC) is looking to become a contemporary energy leader by paving the way for renewable energy sources in line with national and EU targets.
For PPC to be successful in this goal, its small policy team in Brussels needed to multiply its efforts to get a holistic understanding of the political environment across critical initiatives, maintain alignment internally, and advance the company’s interests.
From decarbonising the gas market to reducing carbon emissions, PPC’s policy team has to keep track of more than 20 issues across Europe — all at once. Here’s how they use FiscalNote’s EU Issue Tracker to succeed.
Staying Ahead of EU Regulatory Developments
PPC’s European Affairs Director, Christina Papapostolou, is responsible for monitoring legislation, defining and implementing actions to promote PPC’s positions, and coordinating with the relevant departments on EU advocacy.
As energy and climate regulatory initiatives evolve in the EU, directly impacting the company’s operations, Papapostolou and her colleagues trust FiscalNote’s EU Issue Tracker to stay on top of any possible developments.
EUIT closely tracks EU policy changes and sends concise updates on key dossiers to the PPC policy team, saving them time and effort. In partnership with EUIT’s team of Brussels-based policy analysts, PPC can proactively monitor and act on any relevant developments, see future timelines of all EU dossiers, and track, catalogue, and assess their implications to PPC’s objectives and bottom line.
Adding Bandwidth Without Increasing the Headcount
“When looking for a solution like EU Issue Tracker, we didn’t have sufficient resources to track and monitor all the topics we wished to follow. Also, with a number of significant developments in the energy sector — especially in the last year with the energy crisis — we needed more support. Our objective was to find a useful tool to support our policy tracking, gather all the information in one place, and save an enormous amount of time,” says Papapostolou.
Working day-to-day on the platform, the workflow has dramatically changed for PPC’s Policy Officer Elisa Pajollari. “Before [EUIT], I would describe our process as somewhat chaotic, trying to go everywhere and search everything simultaneously. Now, we save a lot of time because we can easily navigate the policy issues that we are following,” she says.
“What also helps save time is the email notifications — that’s my favourite feature. We get an email whenever something has been updated to the dossier file. That makes it easier for us to keep track of everything on time.”
Going Deeper with Human Analysis
In addition to the timely alerts, EUIT’s dedicated policy analyst team delivers information-rich summaries for each relevant development PPC needs to watch.
“One significant thing that EUIT provides us is that when we track a topic, we can also track the background, the latest developments, the timeline, what is expected next, and the key players involved. The platform structure, having all the information in one place, is vital,” says Papapostolou. “Policy tracking requires quite a workload. With the filters we add, we receive notifications for topics that are important to us. You can have the essential information and then deep dive to the extent you wish.”
EUIT’s policy experts do an extensive analysis of the issues that matter most to PPC, distilling the essence of each development and providing focused, easy-to-read summaries so that the update makes sense on its own.
A Comprehensive Database for Research
In addition to the alerts and analysis, EUIT acts as a valuable database for research, especially for PPC’s European Affairs team, tasked with managing issues stemming from legislative and regulatory developments.
“Compared with other similar platforms, EUIT is much more efficient in bringing accurate, targeted information all in one place, on time. EUIT has a unique and helpful way of organising the policy files that serve our needs. It brings great value to us and our everyday work,” says Papapostolou.
Her team closely monitors issues such as the European Green Deal, the Fit for 55 package, the electricity market design and gas packages, and many other initiatives related to energy, sustainability, and environmental issues.
“Everything is included in the [EUIT] files, we don’t need to look for the official documentation elsewhere,” says Pajollari. “The timeline feature is also great for seeing how an issue evolved and earlier positions.”
Building a Successful EU Public Affairs Strategy with EUIT
“We feel confident that if we have any problem, the EUIT team is there to support us. This platform is essential to support our goals as we plan to grow our policy analysis team,” Papapostolou says.
As a force multiplier, EU Issue Tracker takes a structured approach to policy intelligence and analysis. By removing the manual work in policy monitoring, EU Issue Tracker saves you time and puts the information that matters in front of you in a comprehensive solution.
