With the advent of the startup culture and banks and financial institutions rolling out more extensive loan facilities, many young individuals are quitting their jobs and turning into entrepreneurs. Reality shows like Shark Tank have also motivated many young and amateur entrepreneurs to diversify their businesses. But if we rewind a few decades, it was a very different scenario.
In the absence of loans compared to today’s times and the society being more orthodox, quitting a job to start a business would raise multiple eyebrows and be almost considered folly. But some first-generation entrepreneurs challenged the norms and took the jump, and one among them was Delhi-based businessman Himanshu Baid.
Himanshu left his high-paying job in Germany to return to India and establish his own business. Himanshu, a native of Jaipur, founded Poly Medicure by defying his family to pursue his entrepreneurial goals. He was hired by a major electronics company after earning his degree in electrical engineering. However, since he was from a family of businessmen, he wanted to be an entrepreneur. He could have joined in on the family’s plastic production business but he was also not interested in it. So, he decided to build something from scratch.

Himanshu invested in a sector that was not thriving in the country. He faced stiff opposition from family but he stayed firm in his decision and went on to build one of India’s leading medical devices companies.
In terms of medical technology, he is recognised for putting India on the world map. While it was only worth Rs 5 crore two decades ago, Baid’s firm Poly Medicure now has a market capitalisation of Rs 13,260 crore. According to the Poly Medicure Annual Report 2023, Himanshu Baid, who heads the company as Managing Director, earned a total of nearly Rs 13 crore in compensation, which includes salary requirements, commission and sitting fees.
