The series tells the story of the manhunt to find Peter Sutcliffe, who murdered 13 women and attempted to kill seven others between 1975 and 1980.
Bulmer & Lumb, on Royds Hall Lane, off Halifax Road, was used for Leeds’ Millgarth Police Station.
When filming began, a spokesperson said the business understood that it was still an “emotive episode in West Yorkshire’s history – but we have been assured by the series’ producers that the story will be sensitively told”.
The series focuses on the lives of Sutcliffe’s victims and the toll the investigation took on the detectives who led the investigation.
Millgarth played a huge role in that investigation and Bulmer & Lumb was used for both external and internal shots.
“The internal police station scenes were at our Bradford site, from the incredible transformation of our old colour office into the main incident room, then once the filming is complete, back again to a normal office environment,” said a spokesperson.
“The set preparation began at the beginning of June 2022 with filming starting mid-July 2022.
“Carpenters, painters, the prop team and more all work under the direction of the set designers to make sure that the set is ready for the first day of filming.
“The level of detail that the set preparation team went into is incredible – even asking if they could use our old lever arch files for the incident room as the ones they had purchased looked too new and not authentic enough.”
Reflecting on the filming, they added: “The setup part is relatively calm. This all changes in the days before filming begins when trucks start arriving, scaffolding is erected, cherry pickers for lighting rigs arrive – chaos ensues – but it is organised, exciting chaos.
“There are people everywhere – from the extras to sound engineers, Toby Jones, David Morrisey, make-up artists perched on stairs, ready to pounce. Then there’s a shout of quiet please, followed shortly by ‘rolling’.
“The circus stops moving, all is calm – the actors work their magic. Then everyone is moving again, ready for the next take.
“It is difficult to appreciate the time, effort, and skill that goes into making a drama series like The Long Shadow unless it is happening around you.
“We have an incredibly talented film industry in the UK and seeing it up close makes you fully appreciate this.”
