How a referee being punched shut down Turkish football

All football leagues in Turkey have been suspended after a referee was punched to the ground by a club president following a top-flight game.

Referee Halil Umut Meler was hit by MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca, who ran on to the pitch after his team conceded a 97th minute equaliser in a Super Lig draw with Caykur Rizespor.

The incident sparked chaotic scenes involving players and fans, with several people arrested.

Koca has since resigned from his role at MKE Ankaragucu and apologised for his actions, saying he felt “great embarrassment”.
