Hong Kong police hunt trio over wounding of man at restaurant in central business district

Hong Kong police are hunting for three suspects who attacked a man at a restaurant in the city’s central business district on Monday afternoon before fleeing in a car and then torching the vehicle.

Officers arrived at the scene on Wellington Street in Central at around 4pm, after receiving a report that the victim was attacked at a premises there.

Sources familiar with the case said the victim was dining with his girlfriend before three men, aged 20 to 30, stormed into the restaurant and attacked the victim just before 4pm and then fled in a black BMW car.

One insider said the victim was a businessman, adding there was currently no evidence to suggest he was indebted to any parties or involved in any recent quarrels.

“We cannot rule out the possibility of a dispute involving a love affair,” the source said.

The force said the victim, 50, had sustained wounds to his hands, left arm, right leg and back.

A police spokesman said the car driven by the suspects was found at around 5pm in Pat Heung, near the Shek Kong Barracks used by the local People’s Liberation Army garrison.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze soon after and suspected the incident was an act of arson, the force added. The car owner, 43, was later arrested in Tai Po.

Officers from the force’s Central district division are investigating the incident.
