Hong Kong legislators granted approval on Thursday for a bill introducing a penalty points system aimed at addressing malpractices among taxi drivers.

This initiative, along with a separate bill passed on Wednesday focusing on the introduction of premium taxi fleets, is part of an effort to improve taxi services in Hong Kong, public broadcaster RTHK reported.

The new points system involves assigning penalty points to individuals found guilty of any of the 11 specified offenses, including actions like overcharging and taking an indirect route.

Those accumulating 15 or more points within a span of two years could face disqualification from driving for up to six months. Individuals amassing 10 points or more within the same timeframe may be required to undergo a driver improvement course.
