The trustees of Hofstra University oppose the Las Vegas Sands Corporation’s proposal to build a casino at the neighboring Nassau Hub.
In an open letter, the university trustees say that the Hub is “an entirely inappropriate location for a casino.”
The trustees point out that the Hub is “surrounded by educational institutions from preschool through graduate school, and a diversity of suburban communities that should not be exposed to the increased traffic congestion, crime, economic harm to local businesses, and other negative impacts that a casino development would likely bring.”
And, the trustees wrote in the open letter, there are other areas “in and around New York City to site a casino that are not in such proximity to multiple educational institutions where so many young people live and learn.”
Hofstra has been at this campus for nearly 90 years, and has grown from a liberal arts college to a university with more than 10,000 students with 180 undergraduates and 190 graduate programs, the trustees said.
The letter was signed by the trustees, whose officers include Susan Poser, the president of the college, as well as Donald Schaeffer, chair; Martha Pope; vice chair; Michael Roberge, vice chair; David Mack, secretary; and Alan Bernon, immediate past chair.
Hofstra’s former long-term president, Stuart Rabinowitz, is now a member of the state’s Gaming Facility Location Board. He is currently an attorney at Meltzer, Lippe, Goldstein & Breitstone.
