The chief of Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah praised the Oct. 7 Hamas assault on Israel and vowed to step up military pressure on Israel in coming days but said he didn’t plan on waging a large-scale attack now, as regional leaders sought to assess the risks of a widening war.

Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s secretary-general, spoke for the first time since the Hamas attacks that killed 1,400 people in southern Israel and sparked a war in Gaza and as Hezbollah and Israel have been engaging in tit-for-tat exchanges of fire across Israel’s northern border.
