Hervé Renard, the new manager of the French women’s national football team, has recently revealed his admiration for women’s football and his desire to take on the challenge of leading Les Bleues to a major tournament in his first press conference as France boss, attended by L’Équipe.

Renard, who left his position as manager of the Saudi Arabian men’s national team to join the Les Bleues, has cited his interest in the women’s sport since 2014 and has been closely following major competitions and the success of French teams such as Olympique Lyonnais in European cups.

Renard’s appointment as the coach of the French women’s national team has been met with surprise by many of his acquaintances, but the coach is eager to prove his worth in this new role. “It’s all about the challenge, there’s no substitute for great competition in our business,” he said.  “There is no better explanation than this to understand my choice.”

The Frenchman has recalled Eugénie Le Sommer, who has been absent from the team for almost two years, and has also picked Lyon captain Wendie Renard to return to the side. Both players bring a wealth of experience and talent to the side. Renard has confidence in the quality of his team and has unveiled his first squad as the new manager. “I think that there is a quality group and that all together we are capable of doing great things.”

Les Bleues are set to play two friendly matches in April against Colombia and Canada, providing valuable preparation before the Women’s World Cup begins in July.
