A 31-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a fire that caused $1 million in damages and permanently displaced 15 people at an apartment building in downtown Guelph.

Guelph police said the local woman is also charged in connection with a second fire outside a Guelph business 10 days later.

On March 12, emergency crews were called to the scene of a fire at an apartment building on Wyndham Street N. near Woolwich Street around 11:45 p.m. There were reports of smoke on the second and third floor, and upon arrival crews found an active fire in the basement of the building.

“More than 30 minutes after the fire was reported, Guelph Fire Department personnel located a female in a stairwell area and escorted her from the building. It is believed the female had been illegally living in the basement of the building,” police said in a release on Friday, adding there were four separate areas of origin found in the basement. No one was injured.

“Damages are estimated at more than $1 million and all tenants have been permanently displaced,” the release said.

On March 22, fire crews were called to York Road and Victoria Road South around 6 a.m.

“A flower bed had been set on fire and singed a wooden patio attached to the building, but luckily was quickly extinguished by a neighbour and only caused minor damage,” the release said.

Police arrested the woman on Thursday and charged her with arson with disregard for human life, arson causing damage to property and breaching probation. She is set to appear in court on April 19.
