Government ends funding for LEP business support network

The final cheque from Whitehall to fund 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships to deliver business support across England was sent out in June, the government has confirmed.

The decision marks the end of 12 years of central government funding for the business support organisations, which were designed by the coalition government to give businesses a strong, independent voice in local economic development.

Instead, their responsibilities will be absorbed by local authorities, which will decide how much support to give to economic growth in their areas. The government expects business leaders to be able to influence decisions through “economic growth boards”, which will be led by local elected politicians.
