Way back in 2016, a Captain Planet film produced by Leonardo DiCaprio was announced, with Glen Powell attached to star and co-write the project.
While not too much has been discussed since then, Powell and DiCaprio are still attached to the movie, with the actor recently revealing that the project might still have some legs. In a recent interview with Entertainment Online, Powell was asked about the film, to which the Top Gun: Maverick star said that, currently, the project is up in the air due to the ongoing shakeups at Warner Bros. Discovery, but that it still may happen.
“I think those conversations will be happening shortly,” Powell said. “I know DiCaprio is super passionate about it. I’m super passionate about it. I think it could be great … I want that one to work. I’d love to play that superhero.”
The history of a film based on the Captain Planet and the Planeteers cartoon series is a long one, with multiple attempts having been made at creating a movie. The first attempt began in 1996, followed by writer Michael Reaves attempting to make a darker film just a few years later. The latest attempt with DiCaprio began in 2016, with Powell not only attached to star as Captain Planet but also write the film alongside Jono Matt.
Captain Planet and the Planeteers was created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner, and premiered in 1990 to rave reviews. The original series is a form of “edutainment” and deals with teaching children the importance of environmentalism as well as caring for the Earth.
