From ‘dog of war’ to hydrogen start-up: what ex-mercenary Simon Mann did next

Simon Mann has all the vim and vigour of a chap who knows he’s lucky to be alive.

The old Etonian former mercenary, famed for the failed “Wonga Coup” in Equatorial Guinea, is pleased to hear that I am enjoying his Boy’s Own autobiography Cry Havoc.

I tell him I’m at the bit where he commandeers a ship during the Angolan civil war, and he laughs loudly: “You know, we were charged with piracy over that! So you can add piracy to our list of adventures.”

Now aged 71, but looking a decade younger thanks to a ramrod posture and surprisingly good skin for a dog of war, he is attempting a new career in the City. Mann has recently taken up the chairman’s role
