(ANSA) – ROME, NOV 30 – Freeing up Italy’s energy market is a
good idea and is part of Italy’s commitments to the EU under the
post-COVID National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), Deputy
Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Thursday,
adding that he didn’t want to fuel a row over the issue with his
centre right Forza Italia (FI) party’s government partner, the
rightwing League party of fellow Deputy Premier and Transport
Minister Matteo Salvini.
Premier Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (FdI) party and FI
are in favour of a recent government move to end the so-called
‘protected’ energy market regime, replacing it with free
competition and arguing that this will in fact bring prices
down, while Salvini wants to extend the protected regime to
arguably protect consumers.
“It seems to us that the text approved by the government is
positive,” Tajani told ANSA at the end of a meeting in the
Azzurri headquarters on energy and the free market.
“Our idea, data in hand, is that liberalisation will bring
prices down.
“It seems to me that (Environment) Minister (Gilberto) Pichetto
has worked well. Then we must respect the commitments made with
Europe, with the NRRP”.
Asked about the fact that the League advocates the extension of
the protected market, he replied: “I don’t want to fuel
controversy with anyone.” (ANSA).
