Frankfurt airport is forecasting a rising share of business travellers to further boost passenger numbers during the rest of this year.
The German airport’s operator Fraport said that Frankfurt recovered to 80 per cent of pre-Covid passenger traffic in the first six months of 2023.
Frankfurt’s passenger numbers rose by 29 per cent year-on-year to 26.9 million during the first half of the year, with business travel within Europe seeing a “gradual” improvement, particularly to “to and from west Europe’s financial hubs”.
“Traffic to and from North America also recorded strong passenger volumes, almost reaching pre-pandemic levels again. In contrast, traffic to and from China continued to lag behind this general trend, reaching only about a third of the 2019 level,” said Fraport in a statement.
Frankfurt’s recovery in passenger numbers has so far been lagging other major European hubs such as London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol and Madrid Barajas.
Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport, added that Fraport was seeing “sustained recovery in passenger demand across our portfolio of global airports”.
“We expect passenger traffic to further grow at Frankfurt airport during the full year – including a rise in the share of business travellers,” said Schulte.
Fraport, which also operates airports in Greece, Bulgaria Turkey, India and South America, said its revenue rose by 33.8 per cent year-on-year to €1.8 billion in the first half of 2023. The group also achieved a net profit of €85 million compared with a loss of €53.1 million for the same period in 2022.
