The rate of price rises – or inflation – for food and drink hit 16.9% in December, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). It is the highest pace of food and drink price rises since 1977 and was driven by higher prices for milk, cheese and eggs as well as sugar, jam, honey and chocolate.
