After racking up impressive numbers on its preview day, Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s movie has had a staggeringly good opening day haul that could see it set some significant records.
Blumhouse Makes Big Bucks at the Box Office
Having grabbed $10.3 million in Thursday previews, the video game adaptation ended Friday by taking $39.5 million for its domestic haul.
Its projections for the opening weekend have shifted in recent weeks from $40 million to $78 million, which could still end up being lower than the final result. Worldwide projections are now up to $130 million. That would see Five Nights at Freddy’s in contention for some box office records.
Those include the highest opening weekend ever for a Blumhouse movie, as it could best the $76 million made by 2018’s Halloween. It’s also looking like it might take the best opening for a movie on Halloween weekend too. It’s already the most successful opening for a horror movie in 2023 and will be one of the best openings for a video game adaptation. Certainly, it’s the best for a horror video game adaptation.
It’s not surprising, given how fanatical the fandom of Five Nights at Freddy’s is about the franchise, but it’s doing so well at theaters while also streaming on Peacock.
The film follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be easy to make it through.
Five Nights at Freddy’s stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Matthew Lillard, Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling, Mary Stuart Masterson, Lucas Grant, and Jessica Blackmore. The screenplay comes from Tammi, Seth Cuddeback, and Scott Cawthon, the latter of whom created the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise. Cawthon and Jason Blum both serve as producers.
Five Nights at Freddy’s is in theaters now and streaming on Peacock in the US.
