Five Guys is coming, Party City is closing and other business news in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Many new businesses are making their way to Jackson County, while some are closing their doors permanently.

Here’s some recent business news you might have missed:

New Dairy Queen opens in Blackman Township

The new Dairy Queen at 2588 Airport Road in Blackman Township opened in late March.

This is the third Dairy Queen in the Jackson County area. The other two are at 106 N. Elm Ave. in the city and 224 Fifth St. in Michigan Center. While these two established locations only offer soft serve, this new Dairy Queen will serve food, too.

The new Dairy Queen is focused on the company’s new “Grill and Chill” rebrand. Foods include burgers, sandwiches and chicken strip baskets.

Five Guys, Burlington and McAlister’s Deli are coming to Jackson Crossing

Several new stores have been announced at Jackson Crossing, many of which are coming to the former Sears building that closed in 2018.

This includes Burlington, which sells a variety of clothing and beauty products; ramen restaurant House of Umami and the clothing store Buckle

Three additional buildings are being constructed outside as well. Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Kay Jewelers is moving into one building, while McAlister’s Deli, Five Guys and GNC, a health and nutrition store, have signed up for the others.

Ross Dress for Less is also moving into the former Bed, Bath & Beyond store.

Party City is closing in Jackson

The party is over for Party City in Jackson, with the location expected to close its doors at the end of April.

Party City has filed for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy through the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. This will allow the store to restructure and reduce its debts.

In response, Party City is closing and auctioning off leases of several locations across the U.S., including the store in Jackson.

Chelsea Cakes is known for a secret-recipe strawberry cake

Chelsea Jones started baking as a hobby, but that hobby has grown into a business known for a signature cake.

Jones, owner of Chelsea Cakes, 2300 Lansing Ave., in Jackson, stumbled onto a Facebook post in 2016 of an image of a “Strawberry Shortcake Cheesecake Cake.” She knew she could recreate the pink and crumbly cake, so she made it for her family.

After several requests for the cake, she said she has perfected it with her own original and secret recipe. Many people call it gourmet or a delicacy, she said.

Jones offers several other flavors of cupcakes and cakes to her collection, including chocolate peanut butter, turtle, banana pudding and luscious lemon.

Chipotle is looking to come to town, but it may not be at Jackson Crossing

Chipotle Mexican Grill is seeking to open a Jackson location, but it will likely not be at Jackson Crossing.

Chipotle was originally slated to move into one of the outbuildings being constructed at the mall near Planet Fitness. However, the company decided to not lease that spot, developers said.

But a Chipotle spokesperson has said, while the restaurant does not have a planned location in Jackson yet, it is exploring opportunities to bring its food to the Jackson community.

Candles with racy names are key to Come to Your Effin Senses in Brooklyn

Amy and Ron Proffitt, with help from shop manager Madison Dunlap, are opening Come to Your Effin Senses at 124 S. Main St. in Brooklyn.

They said they didn’t want to just create a “cutesy” brand — they wanted something that would fit their unapologetic personalities.

The candle names at Come to Your Effin Senses don’t shy away from curse words or racy innuendos. Examples are “Spicy Like Stacy’s Mom,” “Pour Some Vanilla on Me” and others that will make people giggle, they said.

Sand volleyball, batting cages, concerts coming to the home of Jurassic Golf

A golfing venue is undergoing some changes to become more of a center for sports entertainment in Jackson County.

Wayland Golf and Jurassic Golf, which opened in 2021 at 3600 Wayland Drive in Blackman Township, are being rebranded into Apex Sports & Entertainment with the intent of incorporating other sports besides golf into the business.

Plans with the business expansion are to add sand volleyball courts, batting cages and events.

Smothered in cheese, the ‘OG’ is a prime rib sandwich to try at Rollin’ Hoagies

A hoagie is a meal that can fit everyone’s likes, Justin Tobin said, and he’s sharing his love of the sandwich through his food truck Rollin’ Hoagies.

Rollin’ Hoagies began as a hobby in 2022 after Tobin and his wife Jessica took over a “friend of a friend’s” food truck. Since then, they’ve been rolling around Jackson and surrounding communities cooking up their hoagies.

Among the most popular is the OG Hoagie, Tobin said, which comes with prime rib, mushrooms, onions and is smothered in cheese.
