Finnair has introduced 105 new electric-powered ground equipment vehicles as part of its plan to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve net-zero emissions in non-flight operations by the end of 2023.
With these new vehicles, 45 per cent of Finnair’s motorised ground equipment will be either electric or hybrid-powered, said the carrier.
Finnair has also replaced its plastic toothbrushes in business class and premium economy amenity kits with bamboo ones, which have been provided by The Humble Co.
In addition, the carrier last year switched some shorter domestic flights to bus services and launched carbon offsetting. Earlier this month, Finnair purchased 750 metric tons of sustainable aviation fuel from local SAF producer Neste.
The projects are designed to help the carrier reach its long-term target of being carbon neutral by the end of 2045 – this is ahead of many of its competitors which are focused on reaching net-zero by 2050.
