Shipping agencies have raised the alarm after the South African Revenue Service (SARS) impounded five foreign vessels earlier in the month, warning that a crackdown on bunker fuel could spell disaster for Algoa Bay.
Government has been urged to step in amid industry warnings that more than 30 vessels are awaiting fuel supplies. Just one bunker is still operating until its fuel stocks are depleted, sources told News24.
Under normal circumstances, three bunker barge operators are active in Algoa Bay, with nearly 6 200 vessels conducting bunkering operations there since 2021. Some 2 million metric tonnes of fuel are sold in the region each year.
