Explosion ruled out after partial building collapse rocks Detroit’s Eastern Market neighborhood

One person was injured Saturday when a building in Eastern Market partially collapsed, Detroit Police said.

A person who was standing on the sidewalk at 2501 Russell St. was struck by some debris shortly before noon when the top floor collapsed, Detroit Police Spokeswoman Dayna Clark said. She did not have any information on the cause of the collapse or the condition of the person.

Known as the Del Bene building, it houses Beyond Juicery and Eatery on the first floor, Jabs Gym upstairs and a Detroit vs Everybody storefront. Property owner Scot Turnbull, who renovated the building after buying it for $525,000 in 2007, says he is aware of the partial building collapse but did not know what caused it.

He said he was reaching out to an insurance company to assess the damage. Part of the building was available for lease.

John Roach, spokesman for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, said the city is sending building safety inspectors out to the site. Georgette Johnson, spokeswoman for the city’s Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department, said it ruled out an explosion.

Officials had the area cordoned off between the Service Drive and Adelaide Street along Russell Street. By 3 p.m., damaged cars were being towed from the site.

A person who answered the phone at the Jabs Gym location in Birmingham said they were aware of the incident but did not have any information about whether anyone was inside at the time.

The building is located directly across from Shed 2 in Eastern Market, which hosts the biggest day of its sales on Saturday, always drawing in crowds.

The Del Bene building is two doors down from Supino Pizzeria, which closed after a fire in the lofts above damaged the building in April.
