Experts have called for practical solutions to the myriad of challenges facing the agric sector, while advocating proper documentation of land for farming.
They spoke at a roundtable discussion on food security, tagged: “Food Security in Nigeria: Challenges and Remedies,” organised by United Action for Change (UAC).
The lead discussant, Soil Scientist, Dr. Yakub Bashorun, said over the years, the challenges facing agricultural practices in Nigeria have been well documented and the problems adequately researched, but what is required is to provide realistic solutions to the challenges.
Bashorun also expressed fear that if adequate funds are not put in place, in the nearest future, there wouldn’t be any agricultural land in most parts of the country.
On her part, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Lagos State, Ms. Ruth Olusanya called for concerted efforts to develop agriculture in the country, saying farming must be seen in the light of serious business.
“We need to take agriculture seriously if we are sincere about taking Nigeria to the next level of genuine socioeconomic development. Number one area of making positive change in this current situation is through development of agriculture and improvement in food production. Agriculture is not less important to any other sector, it is a key area to be prioritised if we are genuinely aspiring for development.
Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Lagos State Chapter, Babafemi Oladeji Oke, represented by his deputy, Shakin Agbayewa, said the security of farmlands is sacrosanct.
He added that there would be no realistic solution to the problems confronting agricultural activities in Nigeria if the issue of security is not considerably taken into consideration.
Oke, therefore, recommended community policing, through creation of Farm Rangers to protect the farmlands, while advocating localisation of farmlands.
Convener of UAC, Dr. Muiz Banire, said the idea of the roundtable and the reason for the topic is to bring to fore, realistic solutions to problems militating against food sufficiency and security in Nigeria.
“Bringing experts from diverse areas of the agriculture sector is to holistically seek possible solutions from all angles.”
