Exclusive: California, Italy, New Zealand Lead “Hot Prospect” Wines
Each year Impact’s “Hot Prospects” list recognizes the up and coming smaller brands poised to make their mark on the industry looking ahead. This year’s crop of Hot Prospect wine brands totals 40 promising labels, including 28 domestic players and a dozen imported entries.
To qualify as Hot Prospects, brands must have achieved at least 15% depletions growth for 2022, while also showing consistent growth in the two preceding years. For spirits, imported wines, and RTDs, brand volumes must be between 50,000 and 200,000 cases, while domestic wines are between 50,000 and 250,000 cases.
Among domestic wines, California dominates, accounting for all but three of the award winners, with the remainder hailing from Washington and Oregon. Altogether the domestic brands qualifying as Hot Prospects have shown impressive recent gains, advancing from a collective 1.2 million cases in 2019 to 3.4 million cases last year as growth rates averaged 47% in 2022.
Hot Prospect domestic wines above 130,000 cases include La Terre, Winemakers Selection, Proverb, Raeburn, Cribari, 19 Crimes Martha’s Chard, Franciscan, Unshackled, Silver Gate, and Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon.
On the import side, Italy, the largest imported wine category in the market, and New Zealand, ranked third, both fielded four brands among the award winners. They were joined by honorees from Argentina, Portugal, Spain, and France. Imported wine Hot Prospects above 70,000 cases include Kim Crawford Illuminate, Domaine Bousquet, Silk & Spice, La Gioiosa, Avaline, and Cupcake Signature Sweets.
