What is African Giants about?

“Over a weekend visit in Los Angeles, two first-generation Sierra Leonean American brothers navigate the changing dynamics of brotherhood after a surprise announcement,” the official logline reads.

African Giants is written and directed by Omar S. Kamara, a first-time feature filmmaker who previously made a short film titled Mass Ave in 2021.

The movie stars Dillon Daniel Mutyaba and Omete Anassias as brothers Alhaji and Sheku. The cast also includes Tanyell Waivers, Josh Lopez, Kathleen Kenny, and Scott Bender. Kamara produces the movie alongside Leo Blumberg-Woll and Jordan Tyner, while Jonas Fischer serves as the cinematographer.

African Giants will screen at the 2024 Slamdance Film Festival at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2024, at The Summer and David Theater in Park City, Utah. Another screening will be held at the same location at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.

The official African Giants Instagram account posted about the upcoming screening at the Slamdance Film Festival on December 4, 2023, saying, “The same film festival that premiered the debut features of Christopher Nolan, Bong Joon Ho, and the early work of Soderbergh and Rian Johnson. Our team wanted an opportunity to make a film without waiting for the industry to give us permission to do so. We made this film for virtually NO money from where a feature is concerned but the dedication and creativity of my collaborators didn’t make it feel so. We love this move with every fiber of my being. We feel like African Giants.”
