Evolved By Nature, a Boston-based sustainable chemistry company, is expanding its reach by partnering with 14 new tanneries in Italy and Thailand. Backed by Chanel, it collaborated with eight partners in Bangkok and six in Italy to produce leather using their proprietary Activated Silk peptides. These peptides have been transformed into a water-resistant treatment that is free of PFAS and other questionable chemicals. Notably, this expansion follows the company’s successful fundraising campaign, which secured US $ 120 million in 2022.
The majority of the tanneries joining forces with Evolved By Nature are affiliated with the Leather Working Group, an organisation dedicated to promoting responsible production within the global leather sector. These distinguished tanneries include Sirte, Curtiba, Fracopel, Nuova Overlord, and Pellami Due C in Italy, as well as Kongsiri, Chun Wang Brothers, Chankij, Classic, Limsilp, Vaikijanek, and SF Leather in Thailand.
Greg Altman, co-founder and CEO of Evolved by Nature, expressed his pride in providing a new suite of tools to empower modern tanners to create products that align with their high standards, all while contributing to the restoration of leather to its natural origins. Altman emphasised the immense potential of leather, not only as a visually appealing material but also as a very sustainable one.
Evolved By Nature’s commercialization of its Activated Silk technology, often described as ‘pure silk in liquid form,’ was made possible through significant investments from TVG, Senator Investment Group, Chanel, Mousse Partners, Jeff Vinik, The Kraft Group, Roy Disney, and Emerald Development Managers. In May, the company unveiled a fully operational manufacturing facility in Walpole, Massachusetts.
Notably, Evolved By Nature’s Activated Silk L1 biofinishing system has demonstrated superior performance when evaluated for wet colorfastness to rubbing, breathability, and flex resistance, outclassing fossil fuel-derived alternatives.
