Euclid City Council recently approved a contract with Greystone Construction to build a new fabric-based road-salt storage facility.
Greystone Construction, a Minnesota-based construction contractor, was awarded the $289,965 contract and will begin construction in August.
According to city Public Service Director Daniel Knecht, the original domed wood structure that was built around 50 years ago has collapsed. The previous wood structure’s failure prompted an immediate need for a replacement in order to preserve the salt and to conform to Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s stormwater regulations regarding how communities store winter salt in order to reduce runoff.
“After looking at what we can build in the area, and talking to multiple municipalities, the fabric-type structure that we are proposing here tonight was the clear leader in ease of erection, as well as longevity of its life, as well as cost factor,” Knecht said at the June 20 council meeting.
While construction is underway Euclid will buy smaller amounts of salt to use and store it off-site. This will allow construction of the new structure and ensure salt is on hand in case of unforeseen weather.
The new structure will have a prorated 20-year warranty on the fabric itself as well as the galvanized steel skeleton that the fabric is stretched over. Constitution will completed by the end of 2023.
