Environmental services firm eyes ‘exciting’ 2023

A Bristol-headquartered environmental services firm is eyeing “another exciting year” in 2023, its chief executive and co-founder has told Insider, with the company now working towards its Series A fundraise on the back of an expansion into the North American market.

Ecologi is a global community of more than 38,000 individuals and businesses funding impactful climate proposals.

This includes both individuals and businesses such as Shopify, HSBC, BBC and BAFTA.

Speaking to Insider, Elliot Coad noted that the company has spent 2022 building a free carbon accounting tool for SMEs. Ecologi Zero, which he hopes will help make Net Zero “tangible and trustworthy, so that every business can accurately measure its carbon footprint”.

“Our community of 38,000 members has rapidly grown since our inception a few years ago, funding four times as many trees in 2022 as it did in 2020 – taking us to a staggering 55 million trees.

“Since we started, we’ve also prevented more than 2.4 million tonnes of CO2e from being emitted through the world-class carbon avoidance projects we support.”

Looking ahead, Coad believes that perhaps the biggest challenge the sector faces is the ongoing financial crisis.

“For many SMEs, the barriers to taking climate action can seem immense – from cost to resource pressures,” he said. “There’s a risk that the economic downturn will lead to sustainability dropping down their list of priorities, as they focus on keeping the wheels turning.

“We’ll be doubling down on showing small businesses that taking those first steps needn’t be expensive nor time consuming. And with more regulation coming, it’s essential that they don’t get left behind.”

As far as Ecologi goes, he added: “In a similar vein, we’ll be focusing on keeping our own wheels turning. Global economic headwinds are affecting every sector – particularly tech.”

Despite this, Coad believes that 2023 is shaping up to be “another exciting year for Ecologi, as we look to roll out Ecologi Zero more widely, helping thousands of SMEs to measure their carbon footprint”.

“After such rapid growth in 2022, 2023 will be about taking a deeper look at our audience, the challenges they’re currently facing and how we can best support them.”
