Tewkesbury High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) is excited to unveil its initial design ideas for upgrading four important areas of the historic town centre.

Everyone who is interested in making sure Tewkesbury will enjoy a prosperous and vibrant future is invited to Tewkesbury Town Hall on Thursday, 28 September 2023 between 10am and 4pm to see and comment on the ideas for:

• Refurbishment of Post Office Lane
• Refurbishment of Warder’s Alley
• Refurbishment of Smith’s Lane
• The trial of an enhanced seating area on the High Street next to Bishop’s Walk

The plans prepared by the HSHAZ – a partnership between Tewkesbury Borough Council and Historic England to invest £1m in the regeneration of the historic town centre – suggest improvements to paving, lighting, seating, planting and the addition of decorative artwork.

If you don’t have time to talk to us on 28 September, don’t worry. You can look at the ideas on our website, and send us your comments by filling in the online form. If you need a paper form, please ask at the Tewkesbury Town Hall enquiry desk.

Councillor Richard Stanley, Leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council said, “This is an important first step for the HSHAZ to ensure that its work delivers for the people of Tewkesbury and aligns with the nearby garden town programme’s new approach.

“Tewkesbury’s historic town centre is key to successful future growth in the town. We need to protect and enhance the beautiful public spaces in Tewkesbury to ensure that they meet the needs of our residents, businesses and visitors now and in the future.

“The look and vibrancy of the town centre is likely to be a crucial factor for people deciding whether to pick the town for their new job, home or business investment in the years ahead.”

Rebecca Barrett, Regional Director for the South West at Historic England, added “The start of this period of public consultation is a milestone for the High Street Heritage Action Zone, and the team is keen to hear from as many people as possible. Tewkesbury is a remarkable place, full of history, stories and special buildings, tied together by the town’s streetscape and public spaces. We’re really pleased that our funding through the High Street Heritage Action Zone will help to improve and enliven these important spaces across the town centre.”
