Eid ul Adha in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei – dates announced

Eid ul Adha 2023 dates around the world have been announced following the sighting of the new crescent moon. Today (June 18) marks the 29th day of Dhul Qadah in the Islamic calendar, and worshippers have been gathering to see the first sight of the moon.

It marks the start of Dhul Hijjah and decides which day the Eid ul Adha 2023 festivities will take place, as they are on the 10th day of the month. The moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia at around 5pm (UK time) and it was announced that Eid ul Adha will take place on June 28.




Since then, other countries have begun to make their official announcements. Big celebrations are being planned in Birmingham with Green Lane Mosque getting ready to host Eid in the Park in Small Heath Park.

The Saudi date is in accordance with the astronomical predictions on its predetermined national Government calendar and is despite UK astronomers saying the moon might not be visible. Other countries are confirming that they have not seen the moon and so are declaring the date as June 29 instead.

According to the Arabian Business newspaper, the following countries have announced dates for Eid Al Adha 2023:

  • Indonesia: The Ministry of Religious Affairs confirmed that no moon has been sighted, meaning Eid will fall on Thursday June 29
  • Malaysia: No moon was sighted, meaning Eid will begin on Thursday, June 29, according to the Assistant Secretary of the Council of Rulers
  • Brunei: Once again, no moon was sighted in the night sky, meaning the Islamic holiday will begin on Thursday, June 29

Eid ul Adha is a festival that involves family feasts, prayers and giving gifts. The holiday of Arafat Day happens on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah, with the Eid holiday landing on the 10th.
