The economy of the Netherlands was the 18th largest in the world in 2022 and the Netherlands is the world’s second-largest exporter of agricultural products. The Netherlands is the 6th export destination for Sri Lanka. Total export value from Sri Lanka to the Netherlands was USD 428.27 Mn in 2022 and total imports from the Netherlands to Sri Lanka for the same period were USD 86.43 Mn. Sri Lanka’s exports to the Netherlands have increased by 0.60% in 2022 compared to the previous year 2021.

Sri Lanka’s main export products to the Netherlands in 2022 are Apparel & Textile, Coconut-based Products, Rubber-Based Products, Fish & Fisheries Products, Tea, Engineering Products, Food, Feed and beverages, other manufacturers, Cut Flowers and Foliage, Wood and wooden products, Spices, Essential Oils and oleoresins, Tobacco, Fruits, Nuts and Vegetables, Non-metallic Mineral Products, other export Crops, Paper & Paper Products, Leather Products, Chemicals & Plastic Products, Base Metal Products, Diamonds, Gems & Jewellery.

Dr. Prasanna has roots in a diverse range of industries such as finance, automobiles, IT outsourcing, agriculture, and energy, based in Europe for over 30 years, he hopes to use his position and international influence to support his motherland economically at this time.

Dr. Prasanna Gunawardena was handed the letter of appointment by Dilum Amunugama, the State Minister of Investment Promotion of Sri Lanka. The appointment of Country Representatives has been officially informed to each respective foreign mission and each representative has been tasked with elevating the image of Sri Lanka and attracting foreign direct investments to the country. They will represent Sri Lanka within their respective countries as well as globally while interacting directly with the Board of Investments (BOI) as well as the Sri Lankan Embassy where they are based. State Minister Dilum Amunugama stated that he believes it to be one step in moving closer towards making Sri Lanka a credible destination for investments shortly.

He was the head of a Dutch Delegation- Promoting Sustainable Agriculture Business and Renewable Energy in West Africa (the Republic of Guinea), in December 2022.
