Developer: Addison project has new tenant

ADDISON ― Will the redevelopment of the former Key Bank building in Addison be called “Mill Pond Commons” or “Village Commons”? That is one question businessman Mike Leonard said he hopes the community will help him decide.

Leonard gave a progress report Monday to the Addison Village Council on the facility, which is tentatively set for completion in June. Leonard acquired the former bank building, which houses the Addison Post Office.

Joining the floorspace will be the Sandbar Cafe, Coffee and Creamery, owned by Ann Coghlin and currently at Manitou Beach. The new location will provide ample kitchen space for Coghlin’s culinary business.

The post office will remain in the north part of the building, with Leonard preparing the rest of the footprint for the Addison Senior Center, Addison Branch Library and the Addison Village Hall.

While each business or organization will have its own name, Leonard said, he is looking to the public to offer a name for the overall complex. He is working with village officials to place a poll online to determine which name is more suitable.

The fate of what will become of the former village hall and library across the street from the new facility is still unknown. The council discussed the possibility of selling or demolishing the aging structure, but tabled further discussion until the move was complete.

The village, senior center, post office and Coghlin will lease their respective spaces from Leonard. Coghlin plans to continue what she has done in the Manitou Beach village district: offer food to eat in or take out, desserts, and with indoor and outdoor seating.

Leonard’s development fulfills a proposed separate project some-20 years ago by the Kiwanis Club of Addison that looked to put the village offices, library and senior center under one roof. That project, geared for West Main Street near the site of the former mill, did not proceed beyond the concept drawing stage.

In other business, the village council on Monday affirmed the community’s cleanup dates will be May 9, 10 and 11, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Large disposal receptacles will be placed at the department of public works for residents to offload select, unwanted items.
