Despite worsening economic conditions, South Africa’s private sector is still persevering – even when it feels like it’s fighting a losing battle.
As multiple crises continue to cripple the country’s economy, business leaders are forced to choose between throwing in the towel or turning their anguish into action.
M&C Saatchi Abel Group SA chief Mike Abel and Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) CEO Busi Mavuso are among the top executives joining News24’s On The Record Summit in Cape Town on Thursday, 25 May to discuss solutions to the country’s economic decline.
News24 editors will facilitate six panel discussions during the full-day summit, hosted in partnership with Nedbank at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Each panel discussion will focus on vital interventions needed to combat SA’s slide towards state failure – including activism, criminal justice reforms, and political change.

Other speakers on the day include Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, Rise Mzansi leader Songezo Zibi, NPA deputy prosecutions head Anton du Plessis, and Unite Behind director Zackie Achmat.
Helena Wasserman, News24’s business editor, will lead the discussion centred on South Africa’s private sector, asking the panelists, “Why are we still doing business here?”
“South Africa is in crisis, and this presents both tremendous risk, but also opportunity, for companies. Our panelists are leaders in a diverse range of industries, and I look forward to hear their views on the business case for South Africa in a challenging time,” said Wasserman.
