Design Your Business to Support Your Life (Sabrina Starling On Small Business)

This is the time of year when strategic planning is top of mind for business owners. At Tap the Potential, we do strategic planning differently with our business owners.

Most business coaches focus on revenue growth. Rather than starting with a revenue goal and laying out plans to achieve that, we start with a vision for how you want to experience your life as you grow your business.

Rapid revenue growth can destroy profit and your quality of life. Work should support life, not the other way around. It’s much more effective to scale your business profitably while designing your business to support your life.

A business vision is only as compelling as the personal vision to which it’s connected. I’ve coached many clients over the years. The business owners who skyrocket their success and overcome obstacles and challenges are crystal clear on what they are creating and how that will significantly impact their family, team and community.

A compelling, vivid vision is also a buffer against the effects of chronic stress. When we can ascribe meaning to the stressors we encounter, we can better mitigate the impact of stress on our bodies. When your business transforms, there are many changes, i.e., potential stressors. When we can make sense of those changes as part of propelling us toward our vision, those changes are less stressful, and we are more likely to persist to the other side of those changes.

When we vision, we connect with our intrinsic motivation — experiences that bring us joy and make our lives meaningful. When we create a vision, we start with what we want to experience. It’s not about what we want to have. It’s what we want to experience in our lives.

I invite you to start this process by designing your vision for your personal life. Here are a few questions to support you in creating a compelling, vivid vision:

► What are you experiencing when you are healthy, strong and resilient?

► When your relationship with your spouse or significant other is at a “10,” what are you experiencing? How are you showing up?

► When you are parenting at a “10,” how are you showing up?

► What are you doing when you are enjoying your friends and being a good friend to others?

► How do others feel in your presence?

► How is your business supporting you in having a high-quality life?

► You’re celebrating the most profitable year ever in business. What happened?

► You are recognized as an employer of choice in your industry and community. Your business is a great place to work. Your team and you wake up excited and energized for the day ahead. What choices, habits and systems are supporting that experience?

► What are your best clients and customers saying about their experience with your business?
